IBM SAN Volume Controller

The concept of Storage Area Networks presented customers with the ability to pool disk resources with improved connectivity and performance, thereby allowing the free space on underutilised disk to be allocated where required. In principal, this abstraction layer provides massive benefits to organisations. However with the procurement of storage resources for specific projects and tendering for the best prices for disk subsystems; in practice the result is often a disparate SAN with a complex array of tools required to manage each vendors’ storage subsystem. The disparate and complex nature of multi-vendor Storage Area Networks means that it is increasingly difficult and costly to administer, maintain and expand or migrate without disruption to services.

IBM Storage virtualisation using SAN Volume Controller (SVC) seeks to address these issues by further expanding the storage abstraction layer. IBM SAN Volume Controller presents a logical view of the physical disk resources - enabling the host servers to be allocated storage constituted from other storage vendors’ disk subsystems. Presented via the SAN Volume Controller the storage allocation appears to be from the same location, same paths and accessed using the same operating system device drivers, simplifying the allocation of storage and removing problems experienced by coexisting multipath software within the same host. IBM SAN Volume Controller solutions use Open Systems Standards allowing customers the freedom of choice in terms of disk storage subsystem vendor selection moving forward.

By providing a logical view to the storage resources the multiple vendor management interfaces are replaced with a single user interface capable of consistently managing host storage allocation without disrupting services as well as the advanced SAN Volume Controller functions including the native disaster recovery, mirroring and snapshot technologies.

Virtualisation provided by SAN Volume Controller allows storage administrators to change the underlying storage subsystems without disrupting the storage presented to the host servers via the SVC and as IBM SAN Volume Controller is a redundant, modular and scalable solution additional nodes can be added as your company grows; non-disruptively to provide enterprise class availability and scalability.

By adding IBM TotalStorage Productivity Centre (TPC) the management and monitoring of your virtualised and legacy storage infrastructure is further simplified.
