Course Description

In the Tivoli Workload Scheduler Suite Scheduling and Operations course, students will gain an understanding of the ITWS features, environment and new terminology. Students will be able to plan, implement, monitor and efficiently manage an ITWS Production Day Plan. Students learn new features in ITWS and the Job Scheduling Console.

The course details the building of a Plan by defining and documenting the Plan objects and their properties. Job and Job Stream instances are designed using recovery options, external dependencies, prompts and other Plan objects. The course provides skills to confidently integrate desired changes appropriate to the Plan, Jobs or Job Streams. Students develop valuable skills to optimise Plans and methods of troubleshooting Plan problems.

This training is done in a classroom environment with interspersed, hands-on laboratory opportunities to practice concepts by performing student exercises using real-world scenarios.

Objectives

This course enables you to build the necessary knowledge and skills to:

• Describe a production day, the function of Jnextday, the difference between a database and a plan, and the TWS scheduling objects.
• Compare command line terminology to JS Console terminology.
• Describe how ITWS plans and ITWS databases are managed.
• Describe new functions available in TWS 8.2 and JSC 1.3.
• Using the JSC, to monitor the states of Job Stream instances in the current Plan and what conditions cause state transitions.
• Use the Plan to display, select, and modify current production day Job Stream and Job instance information.
• Execute Plan control commands (submit, reply, rerun, cancel, and kill).
• Demonstrate how to respond to Prompts and Job confirmations.
• Explain the difference between "hold;/release", "release all", and "release" when used with prompt states.
• Define ITWS Job Stream objects: parameters, jobs, users, prompts, resources, and calendars.
• Configure the ITWS Job automated recovery options.
• Describe the affect of the "production day" and "time zones" on ITWS Job Streams.
• List the steps necessary to plan a job and draw a Processing Flow Diagram and general Job Stream processing plan.
• Create a Job Stream from database objects and configure Job and Job Stream properties.
• Add dependencies among Jobs and Job Streams.
• Describe the difference between creating a "copy" and "Create Another" object.
• Demonstrate how to modify an object's name.
• Discover and solve basic Job Stream execution problems and ITWS plan problems.
• Change ITWS workstation properties.
• Stop and start ITWS processing, link and unlink workstations, and explain the implications.
• Describe how to switch workstation domain managers using the switchmgr and Fault Tolerant Switch Manger feature.
• Interact with TWS through global parameters and utility commands (parms, release, switchmgr, and shutdown).
• View and print Job Stream documentation, Job instance output, and ITWS standard reports.
• Demonstrate how to submit Job Streams and Jobs in to the current Plan.
• Describe how to use the CLI to backup databases.
• Identify which user made changes to the Database.

Required Skills Knowledge

• General computer literacy in a GUI environment.
• Basic understanding of production management and "batch processing" scheduling.
• Knowledge of current production job processing flow in the local environment where Tivoli Workload Scheduler will be implemented.
• Knowledge of file navigation, file editing, and command prompt actions for the operating system to be used (Unix or Windows).
